Afrokaans has been instrumental in the development of a new format for kykNET called the TeleLovela. The format, developed by Merran Ann Williamson and Kristen Broberg from M-Net’s development department, tells a love story over four episodes, culminating in a full feature film - where all four episodes are tied together to form the final film.
The first TeleLovela was written by Afrokaans’ Handrie Basson and directed by leroux botha. The four episodes will air from Monday 2 September to Thursday 5 September on kykNET (Channel 144) and then the full length feature will be screened on Friday 6 September at 21:30 on kykNET.
The feature film will premiere in Cape Town at the kykNET Silwerskerm festival on Friday 30 August to a selected audience.
The monthly industry magazine, ScreenAfrica, has also done a story online and will feature the new format in their August issue. You can read the story here

MTV LAUNCHES MTV CHOICE!
Local flagship magazine show launches 21 Aug.
Make an appointment with sassy TV babes Roxy Burger (@roxyburger) and Sade Giliberti (@OneSadie) – the effervescent co-hosts of MTV’s pop-tastic new flagship TV show, MTV Choice (MTV, DStv Channel 130, 16:40 CAT from Wednesday 21 August).
Smart, sardonic, funny and packed full of attitude, MTV Choice puts viewers firmly in the driver’s seat, playing the music they want to hear while taking a mischievously sideways look at the hottest vids, news, views, crews, apps, memes, Tweets, styles and trends shaping their universe.
Roxy and Sade will be bringing their feisty personas to our TV screens every Wednesday at 16:40 CAT starting 21 August. During the course of each hour-long show, the hosts will share the screen with a celebrity guest, chat to artists, A-listers and music icons, run through the top 10 hottest music videos chosen by visitors to www.mtv.co.za, and generally encourage interaction in any form via Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and Vine. And for those who can’t get enough of Roxy and Sade, well, there’s going to be three MTV Choice webisodes available every week on www.mtv.co.za.
Known for their brains, beauty and savvy street style, both Roxy and Sade are veterans of the South African TV landscape, with more than 20 years of TV experience between them. Keep an eye out for the gals and the MTV Choice crew – they will be popping up all over the country at events soon to feature in future episodes of MTV Choice!
Speaking on behalf of MTV, Alex Okosi, Senior Vice President & Managing Director, Viacom International Media Networks Africa, said, “We are very excited to be launching our first ever localised MTV magazine programme; we believe that it will be an amazing show for our audiences and are delighted to welcome Roxy and Sade onto our talent roster. We are looking forward to working with them to create a sensational weekly TV show that will excite and engage viewers."
Commented Roxy Burger, "When I heard I was going to host MTV Choice with @OneSadie - yes, we even talk in Twitter handles! - I suspected I might be on an episode of Catfish! I couldn’t believe I was fulfilling a dream of being on MTV. EM-TEE-VEE, baby! What an honour to be a part of the @MTVza family. The best part of it all is that Sade and I get to do what we love and deliver a kick-ass show - weekly - to the cool kids of the television world: the MTV viewer!"
Added Sade Giliberti, “Unreal! Unreal! Unreal! Is the only word I can use to explain this. It's a dream come true for me! When I was younger I would watch Eden Harel on MTV and think to myself: I'm going to be cool like her one day; I'm going to be an MTV presenter. And here I am!! BOOM BABY!! *does a dance*. I cannot wait to begin this new adventure with MTV, the fabulous @RoxyBurger and of course the MTV viewers of South Africa. Let's rock this!”
MTV Choice is just one of a range of changes made to MTV since July. A host of brand new features include four new music shows offering exposure to South African rock, pop and dance artists. For the first time on MTV, South African talent is featuring alongside international artists via the Rock Chart (airs Tuesdays at 16:40 CAT), the Pop Chart (Mondays at 16:40 CAT) and the Dance Chart (Thursdays at 16:40 CAT).
South African artists also feature in daily music strand New S**t, the breaking music show that premieres a brand new music video to the African continent every single day (weekdays at 17:30 CAT). MTV is also running “Art Beat”, a competition for wannabe designers and creatives to design “short form” content for the channel showcasing the best local talent. For more details, go to www.mtv.co.za/artbeat.
