Meet The Team

HANDRIE BASSON - EXECUTIVE PRODUCER

Founding partner and executive producer, Handrie Basson, has a B.Comm LLB degree and BPhil in Journalism (Cum Laude) from the University of Stellenbosch. He started his career in 2001 with Media24 as a financial journalist with FinWeek magazine. In 2002, he joined M-Net as a publicist and moved through the ranks as marketing & publicity executive and finally brand manager for DStv’s Afrikaans channels. After four exciting years at the pay-TV broadcaster, Handrie followed his passion for storytelling and started his own production company, Afrokaans Film & Television.

LEROUX BOTHA - CREATIVE PRODUCER

Leroux Botha's first introduction to the film industry happened when his father's cousin, a filmmaker in the early eighties, came to shoot a movie on their farm outside Vrede. in the Freestate, South Africa. Not only did leroux get a small role in "The Music Man", but he was also bitten by the movie bug. An old VHS camera and an outhouse full of creativity shaped short films with his sisters whose dolls are stolen by the evil cousins, action scenes with mattresses and tricycles used as action vehicles.

This passion for “movie-making” continued until leroux went to the former Rand Afrikaans University, where he quickly began working at the audiovisual department as a student assistant. His first job in the industry was to make coffee for Danie Odendaal (the Executive Producer of “7de Laan”, an Afrikaans soap on SABC), but after joining “Egoli – Place of Gold” in the art department, the technical side quickly aroused his interest.

Soon he was floor manager, receiving his director training under the capable Bromley Cawood, Gert van Niekerk and Laurence Laurie. After a few years as Multi Camera director at “Villa Rosa” (a Soap Opera on kykNET), reality series such as “Survivor” and “MasterChef”, a series of short films, as well as a full-length film, “Lights, Camera… Love!” For kykNET, leroux is currently working as creative producer at Afrokaans Film & Television in Cape Town, and has been at the creative steering wheel of Survivor South Africa.
