What is UnScripted?

UnScripted is the new afrOkaans podcast, hosted by our very own Leroux Botha. It’s a deep dive into the craft and business of producing reality and unscripted television in South Africa — for a global market.

From Survivor South Africa to Fear Factor, MasterChef to Plaasjapie, the unscripted genre has become one of the most powerful forces in international television. But what does it actually take to produce these formats locally and sell them globally? What are broadcasters and streamers really looking for? How do you hold the creative integrity of a format while adapting it to a South African context? What separates a good pitch from a greenlit show?

These are the kinds of questions UnScripted is built to answer.

Why now?

South Africa’s unscripted television industry is at an inflection point. Local productions are reaching international audiences at a scale we haven’t seen before. The appetite is real — and so is the complexity. There’s never been a more important time to share knowledge, spark industry conversation, and build a community around the craft of making great unscripted TV.

afrOkaans has been in the game since 2006. With a collective 90+ years of involvement in scripted, production, art, creative, and film direction, we’ve carved a space in both the local and international landscape. afrOkaans UnScripted is us opening the door and inviting the industry in.
